Our History
A Passion for His Church

Dr Fred Roberts was born in Durban in 1932. Roberts established one of the first inter-denominational non-racial charismatic Churches in South Africa calling it “Christian Centre”. The trans-denominational, non-sectarian Church began during the difficult apartheid era. A sovereign move of God’s Spirit triggered a national revival and caused a reformation that would change the nation. This fellowship has been effective for a great many years, networking diverse ministries from around the world and around a common vision.

Dr Fred was known as a forerunner in the ongoing “Spiritual Awakening” in South Africa, a father in the faith and a wise master builder. Our Purpose is to serve people in ministry with cutting edge, scripturally sound and Biblical based resources and encouragement. In short, Christian Fellowship International is an interdependent fellowship of Ministers, Ministries and Churches who had identified and acknowledged Dr Fred Roberts as an Apostolic Father, and who have dedicated themselves to one another for the purpose of promoting global harvest. Through a Biblical understanding of Five-Fold Ministry, Elder Deacons and Saints creating a safe place for Pastor and Leaders in Christ and a forum to build healthy relationships.

Dr Fred sailed from Durban to Britain in 1952, where he studied at the Assemblies of God College. Upon returning two years later, he married his sweetheart Nellie and the couple set off to pioneer a church in Livingstone, Zambia. He was invited to take a church in Estcourt, where he built up a strong congregation. During this time he was given land on which a church, a school and an orphanage were established.

The couple moved to Durban, where they had received a word to build a house of prayer for all nations.  Starting with a small group of adults and a Sunday school, this church soon became the flagship church in the country.

It became necessary to find a larger venue to house the ever-growing congregation, after successful services were held in the Playhouse theatre and the Embassy theatre. The church would purchase two other theatres to house the congregation. Dr. Fred then built the largest dome in the Southern Hemisphere, seating over 5000 people, called The Jesus Dome.

In 2009, the city of Durban honoured him as a “Living Legend” for his contribution to the people of the city, noting his stand against injustice and ethnic inequality. His decision to build a House of Prayer for All Nations changed history and resulted in  uniting of churches throughout the nation. His stand for God’s House to be “A House of Prayer for All Nations” was fulfilled when apartheid was abolished.

His legacy of building the house of prayer for all nations and winning the lost at any cost will live on through the thousands of lives he touched.

On November thirteenth 2017 at 10:50 pm Dr Fred went to be with the Lord. I was privileged to be with him as we sang, “Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place”. It was a great honour to be there as a General of the Faith “put on immortality”.

Dr Fred Roberts, our founder and Spiritual father, gave me a mandate to continue to build the vision he so clearly gave his life for, to equip this generation and build Apostolic teams with the harvest in mind.

History is changed when Apostolic teams influence Arts, Culture, Education, Academia and every area of society. Teams are able to build more effectively when God’s gifts are released in every city, nation and continent. It has been well said that “No man is an Island”.

Together we can do more.
